The Ekstrem chair was designed in the 1970s by Oslo-based designer Terje Ekstrøm. The chair was prototyped in 1972, but it took over 10 years before any furniture company was willing to produce it. Before the 1980s, furniture produced in Norway had to be both functional, easy to produce and useful. The Ekstrem is in many ways a symbol of these parameters. The Ekstrem was conceptualized at a time when ergonomics and physiology had began to provide young designers with a more theoretical basis, which allowed them to experiment with various sitting positions. This experimentation lead to unique sitting positions that typical Scandinavian chairs of the forties and fifties didn’t allow. Terje Ekstrøm wanted to design a chair that supported the use of different, varying sitting positions. He wanted a chair that opposed the traditional forms. From this, the Ekstrem was born.
